Akiyoshidai is the largest karst plateau in Japan, located in the center of Yamaguchi Prefecture, and has been designated a "Special Natural Monument" by the Japanese government. Akiyoshidai was formed in ancient times when limestone layers formed by coral reefs in the sea were uplifted by tectonic movements and other factors. Many white limestone formations, remnants of coral reefs, can be seen on the surface of the land.
Akiyoshidai is the largest karst plateau in Japan, and the "Chojagamori Parking Lot" is conveniently located along the "Akiyoshidai Karst Road" as a base for trekking courses in the northern part of Akiyoshidai. There is also an observatory near the Akiyoshidai Science Museum in the south.
It is also recommended to visit Akiyoshidai in the evening! The evening view of the desolate karst plateau is quite beautiful.
